Oral liquid preparations are normally, emulsions, solutions or suspensions which comprise of a single or several active ingredients carried in a suitable medium or sometimes, they may simply comprise of a liquid active ingredient by itself.
Oral liquid preparations may be obtained in the liquid form from a pharmacy or prepared by dissolving the available granules just before its intended use. They are available as single-dose or multi-dose formulations. A suitable container or an oral dropper or an oral syringe with dosage markings is provided with each bottle of the liquid preparation if it is meant for multi-dose purpose.
Oral liquid preparations are often termed as elixirs, linctuses, mixtures, milks and syrups depending upon their composition. The oral liquid manufacturerhas to ensure that his process of manufacture is in adherence with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Care has to be taken during the process of manufacture to ensure the following:
The efficacy of the anti-microbial preservative system used in the oral liquid formulation has to be proved to the relevant regulatory body. Extra measures have to be adopted to ensure that there will be no occurrence of precipitation in oral solutions or sedimentation in oral suspensions while being stored in the right manner. There is a need to have strict in-house process controls in place which include pH and fill volume by every manufacturer.
